Research Interests
Biography
Long time ago, when I was a PhD student in Physiological botany at Uppsala university (Sweden), I characterized the symbiosis between filamentous cyanobacteria (Nostoc) and cycads. After PostDoc, first at one of the few places on earth with numerous cycads (Western Australia; Profs Pate & Atkins) followed by initial molecular studies (Troy, NY; Prof Nierzwicki-Bauer) we initiated a project on cyanobacterial arginine metabolism. The biological interest came from the observation that in some Nostoc-cycad symbiosis fixed-N is transported as glutamine whereas in others as a combination of glutamine and energy metabolism and started to explore cyanobacterial hydrogen metabolism. At present, we are examining and characterizing cyanobacterial hydrogenases from a molecular perspective as well as the function, regulation and diversity/specifity of symbiotic cyanobacteria. A smaller project continues to study cyanobacterial arginine metabolism. We are open for international cooperations, currently I am the coordinator (operating agent) for Annex 15, Photobiological hydrogen production, of the International Energy Agency Hydrogen Agreement. You are most welcome to both contact and to visit us, an inexpensive bed is always reserved for your accommodation!
